Dr. Connie Piccone is a pediatric hematology and oncology specialist and Director of the Pediatric Sickle Cell Program at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. She is also the Associate Medical Director for Pediatric Specialties and an Associate Professor at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Piccone is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology and oncology. Her special interests include pediatric hematology (blood disorders), specifically sickle cell disease. She joined the Carle Foundation Hospital staff in 2020. Prior to that, she was the Clinical Director of the Sickle Cell Anemia Center at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Piccone earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, graduating summa cum laude from Villanova University. She earned her doctorate in medicine from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed her residency in Pediatrics at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, followed by a year as a Chief Resident. Her fellowship training in hematology and oncology was at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and she also completed the Clinical Research Certificate Program in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania. Sickle cell disease and its complications in children is Dr. Piccone’s primary research interest, and she currently has research projects on sickle cell disease in progress.
Dr. Piccone has authored textbook chapters and speaks at pediatric hematology and oncology conferences on this disease. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Society for Hematology (Member of the Government Affairs Committee), and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology (Chair of the Advocacy Committee).
